State of the Game is now going live and they have Blizzard Balance Designer David Kim on the stream EDIT: The live show is finished but the Youtube videos are up. This is really a specific level of conversation for high level players and pro players, which is kind of to be expected. It gives a good idea of how Blizzard approaches balancing in Heart of the Swarm, but if high level of play is not something you understand some of what is talked about might be a little much. It’s still an interesting interview either way. Part 1: Part 2: MP3 download: http://s3.majorleaguegaming.com.s3.amazonaws.com/files/sotg/SotGEP94.mp3...

Heart of the Swarm Balance Update

by JR Cook on

We now have our first balance update since Heart of the Swarm was launched, and it’s a small one but one that should help out zerg players in ZvZ matchups as the Spore Crawler’s damage has been increased from 15 + 15 vs biological to 15 + 30 vs. biological. This change is now live in the game as of yesterday. For the most part Blizzard (and David Kim) don’t want to make any sweeping big changes to the balance of the game just due to the fact that players on all levels, including pro players, are still exploring the game and builds. You can find David Kim’s explanation for this balance change and the current state of multiplayer in StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm here: Thank you everyone for playtesting and giving us feedback on the balance test map. We wanted to let you know our thoughts after extensive testing ...

I’ve decided to change when I will be doing this article. Before I was writing it before the weekend hit, but with the way the WCS is structured during the week, it really makes more sense for me to put this out every Monday. So every Monday (I hope) it is! WCS America Season 1 2013 This past week we saw IdrA get demolished in Group C going 0-4 and then lashing out to his fans which resulted in his getting removed from Team Evil Geniuses and that resulted in him ending his career as a pro player. We’ve already posted pretty significantly about this but it was noteworthy here. In Group C we had both South Korean players Polt and Revival advance to the Round of 16. The other big news of the week though happened a couple days prior to that as IdrA’s now former teammate EG Suppy ...

Since we’ve been approaching the Round of 16 and even the Round of 8 in some regions, a lot of people have been asking how the regional finals will work. Blizzard has recently come out with their schedule on when the regional finals will be and where you can watch them. 2013 WCS Season 1 Premier League Regional Finals dates: WCS Europe, hosted by Electronic Sports League (ESL), will take place from Saturday, May 25 through Sunday, May 26. WCS Korea, hosted by GomTV, will take place on Saturday, June 1. WCS America, hosted by Major League Gaming (MLG), will take place from Saturday, June 1 through Sunday, June 2. There matches can all be watched at http://twitch.tv/WCS and will put the top 8 players from each region. Since these regional final dates have been revealed now might be a good time to start planning those Barcrafts (or just get togethers with some ...

As we talked about the other day – popular StarCraft 2 pro player IdrA was released from Team Evil Geniuses after his Round of 32 loss in the WCS due to his behavior. IdrA has had a long history of bad manners and making offensive remarks and has been warned about it in the past, but the straw that broke the camel’s back this week was when he lashed out against his fans on Team Liquid. There was a lot of speculation on if a new team would pick him up, but as it stands, he has no intention of continuing his career as a pro player. During the Mini-Real Talk he had with JP McDaniels he revealed he would not be moving on as a pro player but will still be streaming, he said he does want to stay in the eSports industry and is looking at opportunities to ...

Team Evil Geniuses Releases IdrA

by JR Cook on

In a bit of surprising news today popular and polarizing StarCraft 2 pro player Greg Fields (IdrA) has been released by Team Evil Geniuses. IdrA is a player from the USA that was popular in the StarCraft: Brood Wars days and became really big early on in StarCraft 2. He joined Evil Geniuses in 2010. IdrA was known for his good play early on but in the last year or so he has fallen a bit and is quite known for his bad manners to other players and leaving games early. With that said it’s a little surprising that Evil Geniuses decided to release IdrA considering he was still probably one of the most popular players on the team despite his winning record. However, comments he made to his fans in the public ended up being a little too much with Evil Geniuses to allow him to stay on. Unfortunately ...

StarCraft 2 Patch 2.0.8 Releases

by JR Cook on

We’re closing in on 2 months now that Heart of the Swarm has released and we have a minor patch that just released this week. Patch 2.0.8 has a lot of bug fixes in multiplayer games and for the single player campaign. There are also some tweaks that have been made to the different flow of the UI and also some new information has been added to the replay feature. You can read the full patch notes here: STARCRAFT II PATCH 2.0.8 GENERAL The “Damaged Units Only” status bar option now applies only to life, shields, and energy. All other status bars behave as if “Always” is selected. Custom observer interface files are now read from the “My Documents/StarCraft II/Interfaces” location rather than account specific locations. The Idle Worker button now plays a subtle glow animation while active. The Regions button on the Login Screen is now visible at the ...

The WCS Season one had a huge week this week. Last week I talked about the Korea region and the Round of 16 Group B (which many were calling the Group of Death). This group consisted of last year’s WCS winner PartinG, first ever royal roader to win Code S Life, premiere SC2 South Korean pro player INnoVation, and the greatest StarCraft player of all time Flash. This was by far the greatest group ever in StarCraft 2 history as these 4 are probably the best 4 players in the world. In fact, it’s so epic I am not going to spoil how it all ends – instead I absolutely recommend checking out the free Vods of the full event here – if this is the first time you have ever watched eSports than this is absolutely the matches to watch: http://www.gomtv.net/2013wcs1/vod/80085/?set=1 WCS Europe is about to finish up their Round ...
